Garrison-Hickman-Ikeda dialogue series to begin

TOKYO, Japan: The education monthly Todai will start serializing a dialogue by Drs. Jim Garrison and Larry Hickman, both previous presidents of the John Dewey Society, and Daisaku Ikeda in it’s December 2009 issue. In the first installment, the three will examine the life of John Dewey and the legacy of his pedagogical philosophy in the 21st century. They also discuss the work of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, whose progressive educational ideals led him to openly oppose the militarist regime in wartime Japan. Makiguchi was arrested, jailed and ultimately died in prison for his beliefs.

Dr. Garrison is professor of the philosophy of education at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, while Dr. Hickman is director of the Center for Dewey Studies and professor of philosophy at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Hickman and Ikeda first met in Japan in 2001; Dr. Garrison met Ikeda in 2008 to present him with the John Dewey Society’s honorary lifetime membership.
